Butterfly Tag

It's been a long time since I've created a tag.  Tags were always something I would love creating when I wanted to play with new product, but I just seem to be short on time lately.  I enjoyed creating a card using just paints and the Tim Holtz Birch Trees die a while back here, so I decided to make a tag using this same method.

On my tag I used the new Sizzix Tim Holtz Detailed Butterfly Thinlits set and Mixed Media #2 Thinlits set.

I first cut out my Tim Holtz tag twice, using Ranger's Mixed Media Cardstock.  On one of my tags, I die cut  the Mixed Media #2 die (blossoms) in the bottom of the tag.  The butterflies were also cut out from Mixed Media Cardstock. There are two pieces for each butterfly, one is a plain die, the other a detailed butterfly. Once these were cut out, I adhered the two tags together and the butterflies together.  The plain cuts are on the bottom.  The butterflies were then adhered to my tag.

Before painting my tag, I applied a thin coat Ranger's Dina Wakley Black Gesso over the entire tag.  If you want a lighter look to your tag, apply a white gesso.  This primes your surface before applying your paints.  Now you can start applying your colours.  I dry brush (removing most of your paint that is on your brush onto a paper towel before applying) my colours one at a time, usually the darkest colour first.  You need very little paint on your brush, in fact it looks like there isn't any on there at all after removing it on a paper towel.  It's always easy to apply more than removing.  You can always go back and apply the same colour again, if you want more.

When dry brushing, it picks up the subtle texture from your brush strokes when you applied your gesso.    Keep this in mind when brushing on the gesso, I like to apply in all different directions.  The edges of the butterflies can be lighter or more vibrant to highlight them. the paint colours I used were; Tim Holtz Distress Ground Espresso, Fired Brick, Evergreen Bough and Ripe Persimmon.

To finish off my tag, I applied Salmon Alcohol ink to a Tim Holtz Gumdrop embellishment and then adhered it inside a Charmed findings (TH93266).  They fit perfectly inside these new charms!  I also painted and then wiped off, so the paint remains in the recessed areas, a Tim Holtz Philosophy Charm (TH92678).  The charms are attached with a Tim Holtz Loop Pin (TH93200). My go-to ribbon, is seam binding dyed with Evergreen Bough and Ripe Persimmon Distress sprays.
