Hello everyone! I think we can all agree that this first Tim Holtz release for 2021 Sizzix Chapter 1 was full of amazing dies. There is something for everyone; botanical, steam punk, whimsy, retro, and can't forget Colorize!
The Gent clipboard was my first make; I was drawn to that umbrella and of course you can't have a steampunk looking gentlemen without gears! The Mechanical Bigz L die has 9 gear/sprocket shapes on it and as a Bigz die, can cut chipboard or heavier mediums. I used as a background, the new Typewriter 3D Texture Fades Embossing Folder. Here's a short tutorial on how I created my mini clipboard!
I first removed the clip on my Mini Clipboard(TH93278). Using Metallic 2 Kraftstock(TH93780 Rose Gold/Copper) in the Copper colour, I covered my clipboard and sanded the edges. I sand quite heavy near the edge in some parts to get down to the kraft backing. I did cover the top part of the clip with the same paper, but because it's not a flat surface, I needed something a little less thick. The metallic and kraft in this paper are two layers, which actually peeled apart pretty easy, leaving me with a very thin metallic layer to work with. Using Tim Holtz Collage Medium, I adhered this to the surface, pressing it down with my fingers to adhere to all the curves and edges. I just trimmed the edge with a craft knife and/or sanded the excess off the edges. Distress this piece too and grunge the sanded areas on both with a Walnut Stain Distress Crayon.
For my Typewriter folder, I used Mixed Media Heavystock. The colours I used were, Gathered Twig and Vintage Photo Distress Spray and Broken China, Pine Needle Distress Oxides. I also used Cracked Pistachio and Tumbled Glass Distress Crayons to highlight some areas. After your embossed piece is finished, cut out a mat slightly larger from Black Soot Kraftstock. These are adhered to the clipboard.
Die-cut your pieces you want to use with chipboard. Depending on how thick your chipboard is and how thick you would like your pieces, use 1 or more for each gear. I usually paint my chipboard pieces with Gesso first, so the paint covers better, I used Black Gesso on these. Apply Ranger's Translucent Grit Paste (TDA71730) or white Grit Paste, let dry and then paint your first coat of dark paint. I'm pretty sure I used Black Soot, but it could have been Ground Espresso.
Once that has dried, add in your brighter rusty colours. Usually I use a yellow, orange, and a red combination. Any of these work well; Rusty Hinge, Crackling Campfire, Ripe Persimmon for an orange shade first, Fossilized Amber for a yellow next and a light application of Candied Apple, or Fired brick for red tones. In this set, I used a blue/green paint to match the embossed background. For those coloured layers, I just dry brush or even dab with my finger as you just want to add colour to the raised grit areas and the flat areas, I dry brush. At this time I also added a bit of grit paste to the clip on the clipboard and painted those areas in the same way. After this has dried, you can re-attach the clip.
For my 'Gent', I used Mixed Media Heavystock that was coloured with Distress Oxide sprays and inks and Distress Sprays and Inks. The Umbrella panels were die-cut from Tim Holtz Abandoned paper(94022).
Before adhering the gears and gent, I added a few bits of Ephemera (Field Notes TH94051). Add your gears, Gent, and umbrella, using adhesive foam dots where you would like the piece to be raised.
A Tim Holtz Machinery Head (TH94038) was added to the large gear and you're done!
