MODERN FLORISTRY VIGNETTE TRAY - TIM HOLTZ SIZZIX CHAPTER 2, 2022 RELEASE

Hello friends! I’m sharing the first of my projects created for the Tim Holtz Sizzix Chapter 2 release.

 I’ve created this home decor Vignette Tray piece using the new Modern Floristry and Silhouette Birds Thinlits dies. Love this Bird Thinlits set, there are nine different birds to choose from!

The vignette tray is covered inside and outside with patterned paper. I’ve used Backdrops #1 and pocket card paper. The tray is longer than the paper so it is pieced with the pocket paper at the end. I’ve chosen a piece piece that looks like it’s collaged. The edges were covered with Design Tape Trim.

After the tray is covered, I’ve applied Distress Crackle paste randomly on the inside and a few places on the outside tray sides. Set aside to dry. 

Once the crackle paste was dry, apply Walnut Stain Distress Crayon. I use either my fingers (slightly dampened) or a Blending Brush to apply in the cracks. 

For my "home" I've used a Tim Holtz Flash Card.  I've machine sitiched around the edge, inked the edges and then also added Distress Crackle Paste.  This time I applied Embossing Glaze powder (Weathered Wood) over the wet crackle paste.  Set this aside to air dry.  Once the crackle has dried, use your heat tool and melt the embossing glaze. Highlight the cracks with a Distress Crayon.

I've coloured a few sheets of Distress White  Heavy Stock with Distress Sprays & Oxide Sprays. I've chosen pink tones, a combination of any of these would work; Spun Sugar, Kitsch Flamingo, Saltwater Taffy, Picked Raspberry Worn Lipstick, Abandoned Coral and Tattered Rose.  All my flowers were die-cut with these sheets.  I really like die-cutting flowers and foliage with coloured heavy stock instead of cardstock, it gives a very unique and personal touch to your project.

For my green leaves and centers, I've also coloured White Heavystock with Oxide Sprays;  Pine Needles, Old Paper, Antique Linen Frayed Burlap and Pine Needle Distress Spray.  die-cut your foliage and centres. 

Before I build my flowers, I like to shape the petals with a Stylus (Sizzix665304).

For my bird silhouettes, I didn't want to use black, I wanted something softer but still giving them the look of a silhouette.  I've coloured heavy stock again, but with blue and grey tones.  Sorry, I guess I didn't jot down the colours I used, but go with darker ones, Chipped Sapphire, Prize Ribbon, Stormy Sky, etc.  I added in a  bit of Distress Mica Spray in Frosted Juniper (Christmas set) to get them a shimmery look.  Also, I've highlighted a few areas with a pink tone of Distress Oxide ink(spritz with water on mat and use paint brush) after they were die-cut.

Once you have everything die-cut, you are ready to build up your shadow box (Vignette tray).  Decide where you want to place your home flash card and the placement of twine.  The twine is secured with Tim Holtz Tack Nails (TH94240) and I have three levels.  Just make sure you leave enough room (especially the top one) for your birds to sit on.  Once you have the twine placed and secured, adhere your flash card, and birds with dimensional foam adhesive squares.  Finally you can adhere your flowers and the bird in front of the flowers last.  Depending how dimensional you want your flowers, I have stacked some foam squares on top of each other for added dimension.

It seems like Spring is taking it's time arriving here.  We had a blizzard two weeks ago, and still had piles of snow three feet high,  then gradually warmed up to 22C on Friday, melting almost all the snow.  I was so hopeful, now it's something like minus 10C today and a bit of snow.  Maybe I should have used the word "hope" for my Vignette Tray!

BIRD & EGG COLORIZE VIGNETTE TRAY - TIM HOLTZ SIZZIX RELEASE 2022

 Hello everyone, it's been awhile!  I've been busy creating with the new Tim Holtz Sizzix release and it's a fantastic one!  Here's my first project, created with the new Bird & Egg Colorize set, and also the Quilted Embossing folder.

I love anything with birds, so this set really appealed to me.  I've used the back side a Vignette tray (TH93568), the 6 x12 inch size for my project.

I've used Heavystock (tda76322)that I coloured with various Distress Sprays and Distress Oxide Sprays.  The first die-cut layer is cut out with black kraftstock.  Sizzix has great videos on their YouTube Channel that show the entire process of assembling every Colorize Die.  Very helpful!

Here is the bird all put together!

I've die-cut three eggs, different tones.  These papers were also coloured with Distress Sprays and Oxide Sprays (Antique Linen, Tattered Rose Oxide, Scattered Straw Oxide, and Tattered Rose).  A great way also to use all those scrap pieces that you have saved!

Emboss a piece of Tim Holtz Watercolor Cardstock TDA53927 with the new Quilted Embossing folder.

I've chosen to colour this with Distress Sprays after embossing (Shabby Shutters Oxide, Old Paper, and Rustic Wilderness Oxide); I like the way the sprays sit in all the recessed areas.  Sometimes you can lose a bit of the embossing though, because of the liquid. You can't really see it in the photo, but there's a very subtle pebbly, leather-like texture to this folder, which it looks like it’s a textile when embossed.  I also took my small ink pad (frayed burlap) and lightly skimmed it over the stitching. So good!

My quilted piece of cardstock is placed behind a Lace Baseboard Frame TH93786 that has been coloured with a Distress Walnut Stain crayon and a small amount of Rustic Wilderness Embossing Glaze in the two corners.

For my "nest", I used Sizzix Funky Wreath 664434 and brown cardstock.  I've cut out a few and cut them in pieces.

The Vignette Tray is covered with Backdrops paper Vol. 1 TH94177, front and sides.

The tray is longer than the paper, so I've combined two pieces, most of the seam is behind the tree branch.

I've distressed the edges with Distress Crackle Texture Paste and Distress Crayon.  The Lace Baseboard frame is adhered about an inch from the top of the tray.

I had this larger bit of tree branch, it's about 4 1/2" long, and it was about 2" in diameter, which my husband cut it in half for me.  This was nailed to the tray about an inch below the frame and is used for my ledge for the nest and eggs.

I've hot glued moss, and the cut up pieces of wreath on the top of the branch.  I've added in my die-cut eggs, one of them has been cut a third off the bottom, so it is shorter.  I have also die-cut and coloured with Distress Sprays some foliage using the Brushstroke Flowers 665209 and Brushstroke Flowers 2 (665210) dies.  The white floral emphemera piece is the the Field Notes package TH94051.

A metal Wordband TH93000 was added to the top.  White Picket Fence Distress Crayon and paint was added.

YULETIDE SQUARE VIGNETTE TRAY - TIM HOLTZ IDEA-OLOGY CHRISTMAS 2021 RELEASE

 Hello friends!  Today I am sharing a project I created for the Tim Holtz Christmas Idea-ology 2021 YouTube live.

The base for my project is the new 9 x 9” Vignette Display Panel.  I didn't take very many step by step photos as I was creating. I really didn't have much time to get my projects done so there was some late night crafting! 

For the inside of my panel, I’ve used the Sparkle stencil(THS132) with Distress Texture Paste, on  Distress Watercolour cardstock. After the paste dried, I coloured lightly with Distress Oxide and Distress Sprays. Sorry, I didn't have the colours written down, I'm pretty sure Bundled Sage was used though, lol! The inside edges are covered with Backdrops Christmas paper TH94181. 

Next I used the Christmas Collage Tiles (TH94189) and green cardstock cut the same size as the tiles to create my background pattern. The Collage tiles are adhered with foam adhesive squares so they are raised. 

This is my background pattern completed.  Something similar to a quilt pattern. At this point, you can finish off the front edge of the panel sides.  I just apply Distress Opaque Crackle paste TDA71303 randomly on the fronts, let dry naturally, then colour with Distress Brown crayon.

For the sides and back of my tray, I'll show you how I finished it here now, but I did do mine later on, as I wasn't sure how I was going to finish these parts yet.  I applied pieces of the Christmas Post Cards TH94192, Christmas Ephemera TH94187, Christmas Snippets TH94187 or any other paper pieces.  These  can be cut, torn, curled, anything to make them look like they have some history on this box.  I leave some of the wood box exposed and once you have it all glued on, apply Distress Crackle Paste randomly.  I have  even cut out a piece of chipboard the size of my label or paper, laid it down, then apply my crackle, then lift off the chipboard.  You are left with the blank spot that you will glue you paper piece onto, after your crackle has dried and you have tinted and coloured the crackle.  I use any dark brown Distress Crayon, usually Walnut Stain.  Apply this into the cracks, I usually wet my fingers lightly from a wet paper towel, and rub the colour in. After I apply a light wash using Distress ink from my craft mat, and a watercolour brush.  Heat dry.

For the back of my tray, I covered it with Christmas Collage Paper TH94192 and Distress Collage Medium.  You have to apply it a little heavier, so the paper becomes transparent, and then apply the collage medium on top after.  If it tears in places, I'm ok with that, but you can always cover those spots with more tissue or your Distress Crackle paste.  The label in the left cover, is an example where I used the piece of chipboard (not glued on) the same size as the label, and  then applied the crackle paste.  The label glued on after, looks like it's embedded into the paste.

Now for the embellishments. I’ve used the Yuletide card from Christmas Layers(TH94185) which is a thicker coated cardstock and placed it behind a Baseboard frame (th94143). This is the front of my pocket. 

Next I took one of the Mini File Folders (th94191) and propped it open with a Christmas Snippets Label(th94190) with a stamp sticker on top, from the Christmas Sticker Book(th94183).   This holds the file folder open like a pocket. My Yuletide frame is adhered to the front of this pocket.  This pocket is filled with foliage, a tiny amount of spanish moss, Bundled Sage tinted Mummy Cloth TH94155 and two Photo booth photos (these have been distressed on the edges) that are in the Christmas Paper Doll package TH94184.  You could fill this pocket with your own small photos or a small piece of memorabilia.  

I die cut a selection of Christmas foliage from Sizzix Holiday Brushstroke 2,(665578) Festive Bouquet (665565) Thinlits sets and also used poinsettia die-cuts from the Christmas Worn Wallpaper scraps(th94182). The foliage is a combination of cardstock, oxide or ink coloured Distress Heavystock.  These pieces all have randomly applied Rock Candy Glitter to them.

The poinsettia pieces are shaped slightly with a Tim Holtz Sizzix shaping tool 665304 (a metal ball) to curve the petals, then Rock Candy glitter applied randomly.  Do enough of these to cascade down the side of your pocket, a few in your pocket, and on the bottom of your tray.

I have also used Idea-ology Warm Velvet Trim th94115, Tiny Bells th94201, and Snowflake Adornments th94200 for the top corner.

For the bottom of my vignette tray, I have used a Drippy Candle th94172, Candlestand Adornment th94166, Woodland Tree Lot th94211, Baubles Findings th94099, Tin Tops th94204, and Mini Flair th94197.  The Drippy Candle is adhered to the top of my Candle Stand (coloured with Alcohol ink to make it darker and more vintage).  Once that was secure, I added more drippy parts at the base and down the candle stick with hot glue.  Colour the drips with paint and Distress Crayon.

The Baubles are covered in the Holiday Snowfall Grit Paste (this is Ranger's limited Holiday Texture Set, tsck78227) with some Distress Mica Flakes added into it.  The Christmas Tin Top is covered with Icicle Crackle Paste, also from this Holiday set.  White Picket Fence Distress Crayon is rubbed into the cracks.  The Holiday Snowfall Grit Paste is applied on top and also on the base of my tray.  My small tree is coloured with green, and Mica Flakes applied.  I think I've got everything! 

Here's another look at my Yuletide Square Vignette tray!  Any little embellishments can be used for these vignettes to create your own Christmas magic!

I still have two more Idea-ology projects and another Sizzix one to share, hopefully soon.  My back is still bothering me to sit too long, so I'm doing things a little at a time!  But, my house is decorated, finished this week!  Yeah!

GIRL IN THE MOON - TIM HOLTZ HALLOWEEN IDEA-OLOGY 2021 RELEASE

Hello everyone! I can't believe it’s Halloween in a couple of days and then we're already into November. I’m sharing my last Halloween Idea-ology project in today's post.

My favourite piece in the Layers Package is this Vintage Moon Card.  I love any kind of vintage looking moon illustration, so I was excited to see this one.  It's perfect for the Paper Dolls.

I've used the smaller Vignette Tray TH93568 as the base for my make.

I have this photo of my mom and her sister in costumes made by my grandmother, who was a beautiful seamstress.  This photo was taken around 1935, so my mom would have been around 10 (she's got the cone hat).  I love the old photos that were tinted with colour, and I was inspired by this faded orange colour with the black and faded white photo, so I wanted to use this colour scheme in my project.

My Vignette Tray is about 9 x 4 3/4".  I covered the inside with paper from the Backdrops pkg. TH94146.  The outside was covered with Orange Kraftstock from the Warm Package(TH94112). At this time, I did not cover the outside bottom of the tray. This smooth Kraftstock can be sanded to reveal the kraft underneath.  You're not going to really see the paper on the inside back, just a bit of the sides, as it will be covered.

I decided to have this stand up and as the frame is only an inch wide, I decided to make a bigger base at the bottom using Stamper's Anonymous Bat Web Trims Thickboards(THETC014).  I've glued two together of the same width (There's two different sizes), I think I had to take a touch off on each side to make it the same width as the tray.  I used two to make my base thickness the same height as my tray base, about 1/4".  This was painted with Distress Black Soot, then dry brushed with an orange, then cream color.  This was glued to the bottom with Distress Collage Medium.  To secure the web add-on, I covered the vignette tray bottom with the Warm Orange Kraftstock, extending it past the vignette tray to the back solid part of the web trim.  I hot glued (careful, don't glue near the lights!) the tiny lights mostly the edges, top and bottom.  There's a few in the centre.  The hole for the lights is drilled in the middle.  

I painted a piece of white Distress Heavystock cut to fit inside the frame, with Black Soot paint.  Then with Glossy Accents and Ranger's Distress Nightfall Glitter from the Halloween Sparkle Set TSHK77411, I covered the entire piece.  I really wanted the glitter to stick well, glossy accents did that, and if there were any parts that weren't covered thick enough with glitter, the black underneath covered that.  After everything had dried, I used Tim's Sizzix Swirling Stars Thinlits set to cut out masses of stars.  I used the negative piece and saved the cut out stars for future projects and the Paper Doll and pumpkin.  I had to move the dies around a few times to get more stars cut out.  The reason I didn't cut the stars out first and then glitter, is that I wanted the stars to have a crisper look.  You could always do it the other way, and probably have less mess, as there might have been a few, ok, a lot of glitter everywhere!

I wanted the lights to shine softly behind the cut out stars, so I used a page from an old book (I had to use two pages to extend it to get the same length) to place behind the black glittered paper.  

My little girl was from the Halloween Paper Dolls pkg. TH94149, the Bat Transparency wings are from the Halloween Transparencies pkg TH94167, and the Moon postcard(yeah, there's 2!) is from the Layers pkg. TH94150.  My postcard was matted with the same orange Kraftstock and machine stitched around edges.

 

I've lightly tinted the girl's dress with Distress Crayon.  I want to say that it was Carved Pumpkin, and a lighter shade of Orange, but I didn't write it down, sorry!  I added a bit of glitter to a mask sticker (Curiosities Sticker Book TH94148) and placed that over the doll's eyes.  Leftover glitter stars were added by her hands, and falling downward. The Bat Wing Transparency was adhered behind her.  Now, because the matted postcard is too thick for any light to go through, I punched some tiny holes through a few places where the stars are in the moon picture. I didn't do too many, I kind of wish I had done a few more.  I added a few holes where there weren't any stars too. I die-cut some stars with my Swirling Thinlits die out of the same book paper, using parts of the paper where there wasn't any words.  This book paper was the same colour as my postcard and quite thin, which was perfect.  These stars were glued on top of the holes, so you just saw stars, but when it is lit up a tiny bit of light shines through.

I had enough room at my base to add in a little cluster of goodies.    I've used the Jack O' Lantern TH94179 as my main object.  This is quite a bright orange, so I painted it lightly to tone it down with Distress paint. I think any combination of these; Dried Marigold, Rusty Hinge, Old Paper, or Bundled Sage works. In the Jack O' Lantern, there's a tiny bit of Mummy Cloth TH94155, Halloween Confections TH94170, some glittered stars, and a '31' Sticker from the Sticker Book.  Spanish moss with some Pumpkins TH94169, Book Clippings (TH94148) and a ticket from Ephemera TH94151.  My book clippings used were:  ‘Dorothy liked anything spooky’ - at the top of the vignette frame, and at the bottom  ‘most becoming costume’.
